Tots for Thoughts

We go in depth on Sonic's new Sweet Potato Tots!

Price

Cost is very important these days, money conscious consumers hit hard by the great recession/depression are looking for more bang for their buck. The new sweet potato tot is actually is 88% more expensive than the traditional sonic tater tot. A medium order of around 20 standard tots goes for 1.59 at a cost of 7.95 cents a tot, and an order of around 20 of the new sweet potato tots goes for 2.99 a whopping 14.95 cents a tot! In 1950 you could buy a whole burger tot combo at Sonic for 15 cents. Now days for the same price you get one tater tot!

Nutritional Value

With the added price however we do get some added benefits. One order of the sweet potato tots will nab you 160% of your daily recommended allowance of vitamin A, and 15% of your vitamin C needs. However you calories do go up by 70, but that averages out to just 14.5 calories per tot.

Taste

Delicious little fried morsels, good by themselves or even better with ketchup. I hope Sonic keeps them around for a while, but I guarantee they will disappear from the menu in a few months. Sonic has a way of snaking items off the menu, without anybody noticing. Case and point; what happened to Sonic’s salads? Last time I rolled through, I did not see them anywhere on their menu!

Some Tots Thoughts

I’ve always liked sweet potatoes better than the standard issue russet potatoes, and it excites me to see restaurant chains finally getting on the sweet potato band wagon. I would like to see other burger chains such as Wendy’s, and Burger King try out sweet potato options on their menu. The sweet potato tot brings up a lot of new questions. Does the added nutritional value make up for the extreme cost? Could sweet potatoes one day become more popular than russet potatoes? Is this sweet potato thing just a fad? Could we as the fried food loving public accept items that cost more, but are better for us? It’s a lot to think about!
